Sebrena Tate was born on the beautiful island of Jamaica. As a child, she migrated to the United States with her family and was raised in Northern New Jersey. Even at a young age, she enjoyed working with children in her community and church. Therefore, it seemed like a natural step for her to pursue a bachelor's degree in Counseling Psychology from Oakwood University, and post-graduation, she worked in various roles in the mental health field with a focus on adolescents. In 2019, Sebrena pivoted and became a Research Coordinator for Nathan Kline, where she manages research projects on racial disparities and mental health for the state of New York.
Her passion for birth work was ignited by the traumatic birthing experience she had with her son in 2018. At that time a seed was planted; however, 2 years later, that seed grew roots. In 2020, Sebrena had her own personal experience with infant loss after giving birth to her daughter Lily, who was born sleeping, stillborn, at 24 weeks. After Lily's birth, Sebrena founded Tender Lily Care, LLC., in honor of her daughter and the overall trauma she experienced during both of her pregnancies. She then went on to complete her birth worker training through ‘Sister in Loss,’ under the leadership of Erica Freeman. Even though Sebrena is trained as a full-spectrum birth worker, she specializes in bereavement and postpartum.
Sebrena's goal is to create a community for mothers who experience perinatal loss and to help them heal and grow. A few ways she does this is through hosting support groups, speaking at events and on panels highlighting the Black maternal health crisis in the United States, and facilitating an annual walk called “Lily’s Tribe” to bring awareness to Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.
Sebrena has also completed her womb practitioner and death doula training under the leadership of Asha Edouard, from whom she learned not only how to bring spirituality back into birth work. With this training, she learned how to complete womb massages, address emotional womb concerns, and perform ceremonies for birth and loss.
In addition to her maternal wellness and birth work, Sebrena dedicates time to community outreach, providing workshops and resources to promote mental health awareness and holistic well-being. Her workshops and resources highlight the importance of self-care, mindfulness, and the benefits of holistic health and wellness practices.
Through her work, Sebrena fosters a sense of community, compassion, and connection, reminding everyone that true wellness is a holistic endeavor.
